From Leather to Canvas – How the Origin of Materials Affects a Shoe’s Environmental Footprint

When we buy a new pair of shoes, few of us stop to think about where the materials come from—or the journey they’ve taken before reaching our feet. Yet the origin of those materials plays a major role in determining a shoe’s total environmental footprint. From leather’s resource-heavy production to canvas’s plant-based fibers and synthetic alternatives made from recycled plastics, every choice affects climate impact, water use, and biodiversity.
Leather – a natural material with a heavy footprint
Leather is often associated with quality and durability, but it’s also one of the most resource-intensive materials in footwear production. Most leather comes from cattle, linking it directly to the livestock industry. Raising cattle requires large amounts of feed, water, and land, and it produces significant methane emissions—a potent greenhouse gas.
The tanning process that turns raw hides into soft, durable leather is also demanding. It often involves chemicals such as chromium and sulfides, which can pollute soil and waterways if waste isn’t properly treated. In the U.S., environmental regulations have reduced some of these impacts, but much of the world’s leather is still processed in countries with weaker oversight.
On the positive side, leather shoes can last for many years if properly cared for. Their long lifespan means fewer replacements, which can reduce the overall carbon footprint per wear.
Canvas and cotton – lighter, but not without challenges
Canvas shoes, typically made from cotton, are based on renewable plant fibers. That sounds like a greener choice, but cotton cultivation has its own environmental costs. It requires large amounts of water and pesticides, especially in regions with intensive agriculture such as parts of Texas and California.
However, a pair of canvas shoes can have a lower carbon footprint than leather shoes, particularly if the cotton is organic or recycled. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and with practices that support soil health, reducing environmental harm.
Canvas is also easier to recycle than leather, and many brands are experimenting with blends of hemp, flax, or recycled textiles to create more sustainable alternatives.
Synthetic materials – from oil to recycled plastic
Shoes made from synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, or polyurethane (PU) leather have traditionally been derived from fossil fuels. This means they generate emissions during production and don’t biodegrade naturally.
But innovation is changing that picture. More brands are now using recycled plastics from bottles, ocean waste, or discarded fishing nets as raw materials. This reduces the need for new petroleum and gives waste a second life. The challenge remains that synthetic materials can shed microplastics as they wear or are washed, contributing to ocean pollution.
Production and transport – the hidden part of the equation
No matter the material, where and how shoes are made matters. Many shoes sold in the U.S. are produced in Asia, where energy often comes from coal and environmental regulations can be less strict. That means even a “green” material can end up with a high carbon footprint if production isn’t managed responsibly.
Some American and European brands are working to bring parts of their production closer to home or to partner with factories that use renewable energy and certified environmental standards. Domestic manufacturing can also reduce transportation emissions and improve supply chain transparency.
What consumers can do
As a consumer, you can make a difference by considering both material choice and durability.
- Buy quality over quantity. A pair of shoes that lasts five years is better for the planet than three pairs that wear out in one.
- Look for certifications. Labels like the Leather Working Group (LWG) for leather or the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for cotton indicate more responsible production.
- Repair and reuse. Many cobblers can restore worn shoes, and some brands now offer repair or recycling programs.
- Think before you buy. Ask yourself if you really need a new pair—or if your current ones can last another season.
The future of footwear – bio-based and circular
Researchers and designers are developing new materials that combine comfort, durability, and low environmental impact. Innovations include mushroom leather, pineapple fiber, corn-based plastics, and lab-grown leather.
At the same time, circular design is gaining traction—creating shoes that can be easily disassembled and recycled at the end of their life. This approach requires rethinking design, logistics, and consumer habits, but the potential for reducing waste is enormous.

There’s no single perfect material, but there are better choices. By understanding the differences between leather, canvas, and synthetic alternatives, you can make more informed decisions as a consumer. Every purchase sends a message to manufacturers that sustainability matters.
